The territory of the modern Czech Republic was inhabited by the Slavic tribes. It was the first settlement in western and eastern Europe. Czechoslovakia as a country appeared on the world stage soon after World War I and functioned until 1993. The Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic were the parts of this country. The independence of Czechoslovakia was established in 1918. Before Moravia and Bohemia comprised Austria, Slovakia was under the rule of Hungary. Firstly, in 1938 Hitler invaded the region Sudetenland, which was close to Germany, only then he conquered the rest of the country. That’s why Bohemia and Moravia became a German protectorate. After World War II Czechoslovakia was controlled by Soviet forces and the Communists became the leading political party in the country. Soviet police was implemented and it was stable until the emergence of a new leadership group under Alexander Dubcek in the late 1960s. A list of liberalizing reforms was introduced by this political force, they were called Prague Spring. The Soviet bloc countries tried to quell this regime.
The changes in the political life of Czechoslovakia became evident when the Communist Party as well as Soviet regime was collapsed in 1989. The Czech Republic proclaimed its independence on 1 January, 1993.
So as the result of the desire for the independence there emerged two sovereign states: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Thanks to the implemented program of market-oriented reforms the period of economic growth began. The prosperity of most of the population was constantly growing. The country took a course for the integration into the European Union, and the Czech Republic became its member in May 2005. Nowadays, the country develops its economy, restoring it after the world crisis.
